Ola everybody!! First week of being in Provo MTC! Or first 5 days, cause I'm still short of a week. But still. What a week! Right when I got here my pal, Elder (Oliver) Demke, was waiting right there to get my bags for me. It was tough saying goodbye to the family and friends but I felt pretty ready to rip the bandaid off and get to work. And get to work we did. We've been doing a bunch of spiritual classes, exercises, roleplays and studying. Just as I suspected, in person MTC is a LOT more fun than home MTC. I knew my district was gonna have some homies in it, and Ive made good friends with basically everyone. My companion and I have already gotten up to some antics (included in the photos below) and we've been getting along a ton. Overall so far it's been a really positive experience.
Portuguese is a lot of hard work. We learned these evil things called "irregular verbs" and I hate them mucho. However I can't deny the fact the language is coming along. Since getting here, Ive learned how to pray, have a basic conversation, and give a testimony. Even though I got a ways to go, Im confident in where Im at, and I know that as long as Im working hard the lord will strengthen my mind and give me the capabilities I need as I keep on these efforts. When I wrote in my journal the first night here, I basically wrote "what Im about to attempt to do will be difficult." And then I thought about it, erased it, and changed it to "what Im about to do will very difficult." Because there will be no such attempting. There is only do. To quote Yoda, "do, or do not. There is no try." I know that Im going to keep working hard, and keep relying on the spirit to make the most of me that can possibly be. I know that the lord knows me better than I know myself, and the things I experience will all be for my betterment.
Lets see, there was a list of stuff I wanted to tell everyone. Has anybody told you that theres free doughnuts at the MTC? Cause there are totally free doughnuts at the MTC. When i first got here the concept of such a thing baffled me, and the first 3 breakfasts I had 2 blueberry doughnuts each. I quickly became motivated to eat healthier with some help from a stomacheache after day 3. Me and my companion have been chanting "Can You Hear The People Sing" from Les Mis like, all day every day. It was stuck in his head the first day and now we just sing it all the time. But that song sounds pretty similar to a hymn so it keeps the spirit. A tender mercy this week was when The Branch President said my hair was too long and asked me to get a haircut, but when I went to the barber they said they were booked until Thursday. So thankfully I get to keep my locks for another extension
Anyways though you guys, the MTC is a really inspired place. Its basically like the most spiritual firesides youve ever been to just on repeat all day for a month straight. No other place on Earth can take a bunch of teenagers, cram them onto one campus for 3-9 weeks, and have them leave a spiritual giant. I know that as i continue to work my hardest and be obedient, I will fulfill the vision for me the Lord has for me going out onto the field. I love Jesus, and have such a testimony of the importance of studying him. He is not only our freedom from sin, but the best example to refer to about just any aspect of life. Its never ever a bad idea to ask yourself "what would Jesus do?" Before anything. I testify that itll make the most of whatever youre spending your time with, and bring the most joy into your life.
